6 Tips for Buying Art
- Only buy a painting because you love it! You may be hoping to buy a piece of art that will one day be worth a fortune. But no one can predict the future. No appraiser can tell you who is going to be famous. If you can’t stop looking at it, if it stirs emotions within you, if it gives you a "happy" feeling, then those are good reasons to buy the painting.
- Before you buy artwork, you should consider some things. First, you want to think of interior design or room decor. The kind of mood or style you create should fit your lifestyle. Consider each room individually. What is the room used for? Parties, entertaining, a quiet get away, a play area, a library or reading area or office space? What kind of style are you going for? Modern, contemporary, traditional, romantic, country, casual…? You should also decide on the color scheme of the room prior to buying your painting…or you could just decorate the room around the painting, if you like it enough!!!
- Make searching for art paintings fun! Enjoy the process. It is a journey of discovery and there are so many new sights along the way. Don’t get stuck in just one style either. Try abstract paintings, realism, cubism, surrealism, abstract landscape, etc. You may be surprised at what you’ll like if you keep an open mind.
- There are many avenues for buying original art. You should check out art auctions, galleries, online galleries, artist’s associations, and online artist’s websites. If you like an artist’s style, but they don’t have for sale exactly what you are looking for, you can try contacting the artist to see if they do commission paintings.
- Buying from the artist directly is probably more advantageous than going through an art dealer. You are able to have contact with the actual creator of your paintings. You remove the middle man (who can charge commissions of 40-60%) and therefore, you generally get a better price. It makes both parties happier especially when you let the artist personally know how much you enjoy their art.
- How do you know if the painting is original or not? Reproductions and prints are nice to collect, but if you want an original art painting, then you should know some of the terminology. If the description uses words like, reproduction, print, Iris print, giclee, Serigraph, lithograph, hand touched, hand embellished or canvas transfer, then it’s not an original painting.
14 Tips For Displaying Your Original Art Painting
- Your art is an extension of who you are because it reveals what you love. Remember that you are trying to personalize your home with this art.
- Position artwork at “eye level” so that it is viewed with ease and more readily captures the passerby’s attention.
- Cover two thirds of the space above furniture with one or more pieces of art to achieve proper proportion.
- If you want to place a painting above a sofa, it should be placed about 6-9 inches above it.
- You might want to try displaying your original on an easel in a corner, bookcase or desk.
- Paintings help absorb noise and remove the empty sound.
- Artwork helps create the ambience of a room. You can change the look and feel of a room by hanging pictures in particular ways and places.
- You can lengthen a room by adding paintings with horizontal lines. This creates an illusion of a longer room.
- You can enlarge a narrow room by hanging a large colorful painting on one side and adding a mirror to the adjacent wall.
- You can heighten a room by adding a painting with strong vertical lines.
- If a room in your house feels kind of “blah”, you’d be surprised at how much of an impact displaying a vibrant piece of abstract art can make. It almost seems to add “personality” to the room!
- Deciding where to hang the paintings will depend on the type of look that you want to create. For instance, if you want to create a modern gallery style, give each painting lots of space around it and even add picture lighting or track lighting to direct more attention to the painting and give the room more of an intimate glow. By placing lighting on the art, it will also bring out highlights of the painting that you may not have noticed before, as well as bring out the inner glow of some fine art.
- Artwork created with ink, pencil, charcoal, watercolors or pastels should be framed with glass or Plexiglas. You should always use a mat board between the art and the frame. Acrylic paintings are more durable and do not need to be framed. In fact, you should not cover oil or acrylic paintings with glass, as they need to “breathe.”
- Never hang original paintings in direct sunlight or near heating vents or under fluorescent lighting. All of these can damage artwork over time.
5 Tips For Caring For Your Original Paintings
- Always use great care when handling original paintings. You should not touch the surface with your bare hands since the oils, acids and salts on your skin can be transferred to the surface and cause damage.
- When storing, place acid-free paper between each item. Do not use cardboard because it is highly acidic and can damage the art over time. The artwork should be kept flat, not rolled up in a tube for any length of time.
- Do not leave artwork in high temperatures or in your car for long periods of time. If shipped in a tube, remove it ASAP and lay it flat.
- To clean acrylic and oil paintings, simply dust frequently to remove build up. Another effective method of cleaning is to blow across the surface with compressed air. You should not ever spray commercial cleaners onto the surface of artwork.
5. Acrylics are extremely durable and their life may be greater than all other artist’s materials. Acrylic paintings retain their original brilliance longer than traditional oil paintings and they are not as sensitive to UV radiation as watercolors.
