6 Tips for Buying Art
- Only buy a painting because you love it! You may be hoping to buy a piece of art that will one day be worth a fortune. But no one can predict the future. No appraiser can tell you who is going to be famous. If you can’t stop looking at it, if it stirs emotions within you, if it gives you a "happy" feeling, then those are good reasons to buy the painting.
- Before you buy artwork, you should consider some things. First, you want to think of interior design or room decor. The kind of mood or style you create should fit your lifestyle. Consider each room individually. What is the room used for? Parties, entertaining, a quiet get away, a play area, a library or reading area or office space? What kind of style are you going for? Modern, contemporary, traditional, romantic, country, casual…? You should also decide on the color scheme of the room prior to buying your painting…or you could just decorate the room around the painting, if you like it enough!!! More on interior decor...
- Make searching for art paintings fun! Enjoy the process. It is a journey of discovery and there are so many new sights along the way. Don’t get stuck in just one style either. Try abstract paintings, realism, cubism, surrealism, abstract landscape, etc. You may be surprised at what you’ll like if you keep an open mind.
- There are many avenues for buying original art. You should check out art auctions, galleries, online galleries, artist’s associations, and online artist’s websites. If you like an artist’s style, but they don’t have for sale exactly what you are looking for, you can try contacting the artist to see if they do commission paintings.
- Buying from the artist directly is probably more advantageous than going through an art dealer. You are able to have contact with the actual creator of your paintings. You remove the middle man (who can charge commissions of 40-60%) and therefore, you generally get a better price. It makes both parties happier especially when you let the artist personally know how much you enjoy their art.
- How do you know if the painting is original or not? Reproductions and prints are nice to collect, but if you want an original art painting, then you should know some of the terminology. If the description uses words like, reproduction, print, Iris print, giclee, Serigraph, lithograph, hand touched, hand embellished or canvas transfer, then it’s not an original painting.
